Greetings Prime Minister Gillard,

I am writing you today, to urge you to use the power of your position as Australia's Prime Minister to intervene on behalf of Sea Shepherd Australia and quash any action by The Australian Federal Police at the behest of the Japanese government to apprehend Captain Paul Watson.

Captain Paul Watson has protected the internationally established Southern Ocean Sanctuary from the ICR, who are in contempt of an Australian Federal Court ruling.

I feel that Captain Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd have provided protection for the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, where whaling is illegal.

During the recent much publicized events between the Sun Laurel, Nisshun Maru, and SS vessels, it has been documented that the fueler ship Sun Laurel was leaking fuel into the Ocean.

I have to wonder who would assume responsibility for the very costly clean up of a spill in the Australian Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary where the act of refueling is illegal.

While I understand that there are differences of opinion and points of view held by the Japanese Government, the Australian Government, and Sea Shepherd, the bottom line is that Sea Shepherd has in fact upheld current laws pertaining to illegal whaling and illegal refueling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, which resides in Australian territory, hence falling under Australian judicial jurisdiction.

Please find documentation and news with links below, regarding the recent events occurring in Australia's Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary involving the ICR Japan and Sea Shepherd Australia.

I thank you in advance for exhibiting leadership pertaining to this situation.
I will applaud you for leaving a legacy of stewardship for the environment of Australia, and setting the standard for other world leaders to follow.

Sincerely,

*Please add date of your email, thank you!

Japan whale poachers spill oil during illegal refueling operation …..

http://beforeitsnews.com/environment/2013/02/japan-whale-poachers-spill-oil-during-illegal-refueling-operation-the-time-has-come-for-the-australian-government-to-intervene-and-put-a-stop-to-this-insanity-2461908.html

"On the 17th of February at approximately 4:00 pm AEDT the Sam Simon recorded an audio transmission between the Captain and Bosun of the Sun Laurel - the Japanese whaling fleet's refuelling vessel. In this recording, the Captain of the Sun Laurel refers to the oil spill that the Sam Simon had documented and collected samples of hours earlier. The Sun Laurel Captain informed his Bosun to take care covering refuelling hoses, and that if oil dropped into the water there would be a “big problem”, as the Sam Simon had caught the Sun Laurel leaking fuel into the wake behind them earlier that morning.

Sea Shepherd Australia believes this transmission is further proof of an oil spill by the Sun Laurel in Antarctica's pristine waters, and has reported the incident to Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

The Sun Laurel is in direct violation of international law. Marpol Regulation 15 Subpart B, Discharge in Special Areas Point 4 states: “In respect of the Antarctic area, any discharge into the sea of oil or oily mixtures from any ship shall be prohibited.”  In addition, The Sun Laurel has failed to issue a statement on their spill to AMSA, which puts them in breach of MARPOL'S Pollution Incident Reporting Regulations. Marpol 73/78 is the International Maritime Organisation's Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships, to which all sea-going vessels are bound."

You have been quoted on record that you find the act of whaling to be disgusting.

Tony Burke, Australia's environment minister, has called the Japanese whale hunt a "disgusting operation." Japan's fisheries minister, Yoshimasa Hayashi, complains that Australian criticism represents "a cultural attack, a kind of prejudice against Japanese culture". Source:

Update from Paul Watson:

Adverse weather has put an end to the whaling season. The whalers returned South more for show than practicality. Monitoring the weather and it is joyfully stormy. The Sea Shepherd ships have just enough fuel to reach Melbourne and should arrive in 12 days. This has been the most successful campaign undertaken and Sea Shepherd Australia has done an incredible job of coordinating it. A very courageous job by the three crews of the Steve Irwin, Bob Barker and Sam Simon. The Australian Federal Police are expected to raid the ships but they do that every year because Japan asks them to. Not sure why Australia never asks the police to raid the Japanese vessels. Sea Shepherd always cooperates with the authorities. Japan never does. They can destroy a boat and get away with it without having to answer questions while Sea Shepherd is expected to justify saving endangered whales in an internationally established whale sanctuary from whalers who are in contempt of an Australian Federal Court ruling.
